MT5 Strategy Tester alternative: build and test rules without code
The Strategy Tester in MetaTrader 5 tests any MQL5 EA on your broker's history. Flow Builder is for rules built from blocks: backtest them on M1 bars built from real tick data, with your costs, then run the same Flow on MT5.
Keep the Strategy Tester if you write or buy MQL5 EAs, or need real-tick testing with a changing spread, optimization, forward tests or multi-symbol strategies. Pick Flow Builder if you want rules without code, want to see why each trade did or did not happen, and want to run them on your MT5 from the browser.
Where MT5 Strategy Tester is strong
- Tests any MQL5 EA, the ones you write and the ones you buy, inside the MetaTrader 5 you already use.
- Real ticks from your broker's history where it has them, with a spread that can change inside each minute; generated ticks fill the gaps.
- Parameter optimization, including a genetic algorithm, with 2D and 3D result views and built-in forward testing.
- Multi-currency testing, visual mode, simulated execution delays and distributed testing on local agents or the MQL5 Cloud Network.
- Included with MetaTrader 5, with a long track record among EA developers.
Where PipLoop differs
- Rules without codeA Flow is 5 fixed steps, from Entry signal to Exit. Pick nodes and fill in their settings. Read as text then shows the whole Flow in plain words.
- See why each trade happenedAfter a backtest each node shows how often it let the Flow continue or stopped it. Select a trade to see its path; Days without a trade shows where each day stopped, and why.
- Costs in plain viewSpread is the median recorded in the tick data, or a fixed value. Commission and slippage start at 0, so enter your broker's. If SL and TP hit in one bar, the stop counts.
- Same engine, checked trade for tradeBacktest and Run live share one runner. A replay test gives the live path recorded bars and a simulated broker; its trades must equal the backtest's, after restarts too.
- Checks before it runsRun live blocks a missing EA, a symbol not on the account or a server-time mismatch. It warns when spread is above the backtest's, and a REAL account needs you to type REAL.

| MT5 Strategy Tester | PipLoop | |
|---|---|---|
| Build rules without code | Partly: MQL5 Wizard generates code | Yes: drag-and-drop blocks |
| Test any MQL5 EA | Yes | No: Flows only |
| Backtest data | Your broker's history, real ticks where available | M1 bars built from PipLoop's real tick data |
| Spread | Changes tick by tick on real ticks | Median from the data, or a fixed value |
| Commission and slippage | Commission settings, execution delays | You set them; both start at zero |
| Symbols | Any symbol your broker offers | Only symbols with PipLoop tick data |
| Optimization and forward testing | Yes, genetic included | No |
| Multi-symbol strategies | Yes | No: one symbol per Flow |
| Why a trade did or didn't happen | Tester log and visual mode | Node counts, trade path, days without a trade |
| Same rules when running live | Yes: the same EA code | Yes: same engine, replay parity test |
Questions about switching
Not in every way. On real ticks, the Strategy Tester replays each tick with a changing spread. Flow Builder checks orders, stops and targets on M1 bars built from real tick data, with one spread value. What it adds is costs you have to set, rules you can read, and a parity test between backtest and live.
No. Flow Builder runs Flows built from its own blocks, not MQL5 code. Keep testing an existing EA in the Strategy Tester. You can rebuild simple rules as a Flow, from a template or from scratch. A Flow trades one symbol with one open position, or one pair of orders, at a time.
No. Change one setting, save and run the backtest again, and look at the drawdown and the worst days, not only the net result. For large parameter sweeps, the Strategy Tester's optimization is the right tool.
Its decisions run on the PipLoop server, so you can close the browser. Orders go through the PipLoop EA in your MT5 terminal, so MT5 must keep running; many traders use a VPS. Bar closes missed while the EA is offline are not traded late.
The decisions should: the same Flow runs on the same engine, and a replay test checks this trade for trade. Fills can differ: live uses your broker's prices, buy stops trigger on the Ask, slippage is real, and missed bar closes are not traded late. Backtests are simulations made with hindsight.
